I am the founder and director of the Teaching Drum Outdoor School, where my staff and I teach hunter-gatherer and self-development skills in a wilderness community context. It’s been a great 20-plus years, but now I find myself being yanked into the 20th…no, wait…21st, century, by these out-of-touch moderns who snuck in and took over.

“You need a blog,” they said.

“A what?” I replied.

“And let’s do Facebook right away while we’re at it.”

So here I am, dizzy from being dragged ahead two whole centuries at once. If you find me wandering around with a Blackberry and a laptop looking for the nearest Starbucks, just do me a favor and use me for Bear bait, okay?

Then again, I thrive on challenge so let’s see what we can make of this. I’ve been writing the entire time I’ve been at the school, and most of what I produce is for whatever book or article I’m working on at the time. Yet I often come up with short pieces and nowhere to perch them, and I’d like to do it here. My reason for writing has always been to join in dialogue, as though we were sitting together around a fire, and the blog format allows us to do just that.
